The Honor Code at Brigham Young University has received a lot of attention over the past few years. It requires students who wish to attend the Mormon-owned university to adhere to very high standards of traditional morality. Students agree to dress modestly, to avoid pre-marital sex, to be honest, and to uphold other values common to morally conservative faiths.
The Impact of True Christian Conversion
Filed under: Book of Mormon, Gospel Principles, Practices & Precepts
In the previous article on commandments, we learned that a young man asked Jesus how to achieve eternal life. Jesus told him to keep the commandments and the man asked which ones he had to keep. Jesus’ answer disappointed him and he decided he preferred a fake form of conversion to the sacrifices required by true conversion.

Jesus Teaches Meaningful Obedience to Commandments

The Bible tells us we must be saved in order to live with God forever. It instructs us to develop faith in God and in Jesus Christ, to be baptized, and to keep the commandments in order to live with God again. However, doing these things just to win a reward has no impact on our eternal life. Unless they are done for the right reasons, they don’t really change our hearts and so they don’t Read more
Why Don’t Mormons Pray Directly to Jesus?
Filed under: Basic Beliefs of Mormons, Gospel Principles, Practices & Precepts
From time to time, I see someone posting (usually incorrect) information on Mormons and one complaint is that Mormons won’t pray to Jesus directly, which “proves” they are not Christian. Let’s take that complaint in several parts in order to answer the question.

Do Mormons Think You Have to Be Perfect to be Saved?

A few days ago, I read an article by someone who claimed to know a lot about Mormons. Like so many self-proclaimed experts on this subject, much of his information was inaccurate. One of his claims was that most Mormons don’t believe they will be saved because they aren’t perfect. This is, of course, false.

In the early days of Christ’s ministry, the gospel was only preached to Jews. Jews and Gentiles did not generally like each other and it was, in fact, illegal for them to spend time together. Jesus said the gospel was to go out to all men, but the apostles didn’t entirely understand that and they continued, even after Jesus’ death, to preach only to the Jews.
Why Don’t Mormons Stop Doing Baptisms for the Dead?
Filed under: Basic Beliefs of Mormons, Gospel Principles, Practices & Precepts
Recent media stories have discussed some Mormon baptisms for the dead that targeted Holocaust victims and celebrities. Many have asked the Mormons to abandon the practice and wonder why the Church has not complied. Certainly, it would seem simpler to stop and end the publicity.
Why Doesn’t God Save Everyone?

For many, the belief that God is a loving Father seems to suggest He ought to save all His children, regardless of their choices during their lifetime. They find it hard to see a loving Father as one who will deny his children any of his blessings or eternity with Him. Let’s look at how the gospel works to see why it is not possible for God to return everyone to His presence.
Applying the Gospel of Jesus Christ
Filed under: Basic Beliefs of Mormons, Gospel Principles, Practices & Precepts
In the Book of Mormon, a prophet named Nephi advised his readers to “liken the scriptures” to their own lives. This means to take what is taught and ask yourself, “What does this mean for me? How can I work on applying the gospel of Jesus Christ to my own life?”
