I once returned to the store to pay for a small item that had been overlooked when I checked out. I found it when I was putting the groceries in the car. It was less than a dollar--maybe 50 cents or so. The customer service person was surprised I'd walk back into the store for something that costs so little. My response was that my integrity was worth more than 50 cents. I couldn't see becoming a thief over something so unimportant. But the fact that she was surprised told me a lot about how the world views that sort of thing. To me, it just seems that if it's okay to steal a 50 cent item, then it's probably okay to steal one that costs a dollar, and if that's okay...where does it end? What amount of money isn't okay to steal? It is just easier to stop at the very beginning of the path.
