Many of the problems we have understanding the Atonement come from a mistaken view of our mortal life's purpose. Our goal is not to "get to" a place or score a passing grade on the test or to check-off the "to do"/commandment list. We're not trying to get back to what we were.

Our goal is to become like our savior, Jesus Christ. Due to limitations and imperfections of mortality, we can't get there in this life. The best we can do is to hone our desire to be like Christ through daily scripture study & prayer, service to others & our family, temple & church attendance, the influence of the Holy Spirit, and striving to improve as prompted.

Ultimately, Christ will help us become the best version of whomever we want to become -- but he can't make us become someone we don't want to be.
