I whole heartedly agree! Help your teen feel their pains. Hug them, kiss them, wipe away their tears, and agree that sometimes things just suck. The Fault in Our Stars had a great quote along the lines of "pain demands to be felt" and that is so true. The more validated and loved your teens feel, the quicker they can overcome their trials and discomforts and move forward stronger for it.

Beautifully written, Britt! I agree whole heartedly and have found with my teens that the worst thing to do is try to argue with or strong arm them into a different way of thinking. We as adults don't like to be told how to feel about something and neither do our teens. Also, like you said, the tragedy, which may feel trivial to us feels very large and overwhelming to them, it will be dealt with and discarded a lot faster if we just acknowledge that life sucks sometimes and the pain demands to be felt. Help the, Hug them, kiss it better and support them as they feel this pain. Your relationship will be stronger for it.
