I love your perspective, and I agree that games are great tools for building stronger relationships. My husband and I love playing Settlers of Catan. It's probably not as creative as DND, but we love it. Thank you for sharing a positive experience with DND. I think anything that helps us bond is a good thing.

I am an active member of the church and I play Dungeons and Dragons and a lot of video games. I found your article interesting. I agree that it’s not necessarily about the games but about wether we are being good stewards of our time. However this does not mean that spending hours of time on a game is bad. I started playing dungeons and dragons because it helped me develop and keep relationships. I was really depressed for a long time because I could not seem to make friends. Then I came across a game that brought people together for hours. They would work together to come up with unique solutions (some of which are downright crazy) and laugh! I have never played a game that caused so much laughter in so many different people so consistently. Because of this game I have developed a better relationship with my sister, my husband, and several other friends that I had a hard time keeping in touch with. I got to know people that I never would have and came to trust them implicitly because I knew how they thought and made decisions. I also got to share the gospel with several people that never would have spent the time to listen to me otherwise.

Point is that yeah it takes a lot of time and it is a “game” but it’s much more than that. It a safe place to be yourself, create and maintain relationships, learn about what kind of a person you are, live out your craziest dreams, and be whoever you want to be. You get to be the hero dedicating yourself to helping and saving others, with the people you care about laughing all the way. This is a great way to spend Family home evening or really any evening and the game can be anything you want it to be. Want It to be about the Book of Mormon and set yourself in the world? You got it. Want it set in the real world as missionaries? You got it.

Point is don’t knock it till you try it. All of the junk about it being satanic is all lies generated by a crazy mom who wasn’t taking care of her kid, you can look up the history it’s not hard to find. It’s a good game and it can change lives for the better, even if it takes a long time to play, so please give it a try.

I love this, Matthew. We all need to take time to relax, and this sounds like a great way for you to do so (with the added benefit of socializing and getting to know other members of your ward). Thank you for this insightful comment, and I hope this experience ends up being a great one for you!

I was considering the subject of whether or not to accept the invitation to play D&D with other members of my ward and this really helped me decided what I should do. Clearly its not a matter of D&D being evil but rather a matter of how are we are spending our time.

I spend so much time providing for my family that I often forget to take time out for myself and this activity provides me a way of sharing time with other members of the ward in a non church setting to get to know them in a different way. I am hoping that by doing this on a monthly basis that I am better way to minister to the brother in my ward. In most of the wards I have been to the men have been particular poor at spending time socially with one another. Sisters generally do a much better job of this. I am hoping this will help me do that. If anyone has any other thoughts about this, that would be great.

Great post, and very well written. I also have researched the stance of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on D&D and found nothing specific. The post gave good insights on the subject. Thank you!

I believe we are now living in a time when our devotion to our Savior is expressed best not by choosing what is good but, by choosing what is best.
