I’m sure there are other examples in the Bible, than Joseph in Egypt, when the Lord tells the people to prepare during a time of plenty for a time of famine. I don’t know how to search for this specifically. Can you think of any to share with me, please? I have a Christian friend I would like to share this with to encourage her to start preparing for more difficult times ahead. Thank you.

Susan, I absolutely agree — being prepared is ALWAYS a positive thing! As Latter-day Saints, we feel so grateful for the prophets throughout the years who have urged us to be prepared for a rainy day. It has blessed our lives and the lives of those around us! Thank you for your kind comment and I hope you are staying healthy and well throughout this crazy time!

Hi, I am also not a Mormon, but think we can all learn and benefit from knowing more about our neighbors and other ways of life. In college in the 1970's I studied the "Spanish Flu" (back in the early 1900's) and saw this coming- I started stocking up on basics, and bought a small freezer. I urged my friends to do the same, but they mocked me- either not believing the massive illness was coming, or insisting I was hoarding. Now they sing a different song, lol. And I have enough to help them right now.
Having sufficient goods to feed yourself, family and pets until it is safe and practical to venture to a store just makes sense to me, and that is not hoarding. It is called planning ahead. Too many of us live from day to day with no thought about future needs for ourselves or anyone else.

II agree, while I am an Agnostic I have known many LDS and they are great people and their religion is very wise. I think most religions have the best interest of their people in mind. I only wish others could see this. Best wishs to you and yours.

We agree — having food and other necessities stored away for a rainy day is such a wise practice! We're so glad you enjoyed the article and hope that you and your family stay healthy and safe during this chaotic time.

I grew up next door to a family of Mormons my entire childhood. I'm not 50 and still remember them well and their practices pertaining to food. Due to the Corona Virus situation I will strive to live as they did via food storage. It is wise and most intelligent. It has been many years since this article was published, nonetheless, thank you :-)

Bible says, after the Rapture of believers in Christ, there will be seven years of Tribulation for those of us who don't believe in the virgin birth of Jesus God's son our savior. For some saving up Seven years of food sounds like an intelligent idea!

I do food storage (I am not LDS) because my parents lived through the Great Depression and then rationing during WW2 and the rationing that followed that. During these events my parents families had only enough sugar for 1 cake per year, and relied on farming for most other stuff, plus what they were allowed for the rationing. Not much. They made sure we understood the value of food storage practiced food storage and had plenty to eat and a variety.
