School started for us this week.  My sweet second grader hates going to school.  Every day, EVERY DAY has been a huge struggle to get him to school.  He starts the day before laying the ground work for his dramatic attempt to stay home from school.  His most recent reason for staying home?  He had eaten too many boogers and was licking the bottom of his feet, so he was feeling sick.  Truly he’s hilarious!  But unfortunately, in his seven year old mind, these are fully logical reasons to stay home.  And I still have to get him to school.  The stress is enough to drive me into hiding!  Quite literally.

So as I’ve dealt with this family drama I’ve begun to repeat the poem “Don’t Quit” to myself frequently.  I doubt that I am the only one feeling stress.  So I thought I would share.  And I encourage you to remember, as I try daily to remember, that nothing is permanent.  And that this trial will pass. Good luck!  I hope you can find the humor in your challenges. And when you can’t find the humor, schedule a pedicure or get an icecream, or take up kick boxing.  I’ll be signing up ASAP.

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

when the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

when the funds are low and the debts are high,

and you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

when care is pressing you down a bit,

rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is strange with its twists and turns,

as everyone of us sometimes learns,

and many a failure turns about,

when he might have won had he stuck it out,

don’t give up through the pace seems slow,

you may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out,

the silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

and you can never tell how close you are,

it may be near when it seems so far,

so stick to the fight when you are hardest hit,

It’s when things seem worst,

that you must not quit.
